Gurgen Nersisyan, a lawyer from the "LSA" law firm, has recently taken on the defense of Gor Aghekyan, the deputy commander for rear services of a military unit, who is accused in the criminal case related to the fire at the "military barracks" in Azat village of Gegharkunik region on January 19, 2023, which resulted in the death of servicemen.
On 23.08.2024, the court (presided over by Judge Vardan Harutyunyan of the Court of General Jurisdiction for Criminal Cases of the First Instance of Gegharkunik Region) decided to modify the preventive measure of detention imposed against Gor Aghekyan with alternative preventive measures. It released him from detention right from the courtroom.
Although there is still a need for long-term patient work, the defense team in this case has sufficient evidence. It is confident that Gor Aghekyan's innocence will be ultimately substantiated as a result of the proceedings.
The trial surrounding this incident, which shook the Republic of Armenia on January 19, 2023, is ongoing under public scrutiny, with various statements, assessments, and implications periodically being made. Nevertheless, the presiding judge, Vardan Harutyunyan, manages to administer justice responsibly, despite the unprecedented psychological and emotional burden of this case and the frequent outbursts of sensitive and delicate issues throughout the proceedings.
